What We Would Do If Management Decides to Resume Through Online Learning- ASUU OAU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities branch Chairman in Obafemi Awolowo University, Dr Adeola Egbedokun has spoken to TECHMIRROR MAGAZINE on the plan for E-learning in Nigerian Universities.

He also weighed in on readiness of OAU lecturers to switch to E-learning in the event of such decisions by the University management.

According to him; "The current circumstances around COVID-19 incidences is both scary and frightening. It is therefore not in the best interest of staff and students to risk resumption of academic activities without adequate preparation for physical safe re-opening of the public universities." He recalled the directive of the Nigerian government that all schools should ensure strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols for safe re-opening.

Dr Egbedokun however said the government refused to ensure provision of the needed materials for the safe re-opening.

"The government refused to ensure provision of the needed materials for the safe re-opening. What an irony! This leaves universities to the option of e-learning, which 99.9% of our public universities are not prepared for. The necessary infrastructure are absent, lecturers are not prepared and internet facilities are very very deficient." While maintaining that little has been done to prepare schools for E-learning, he stated that in the event of necessary support for E-learning, lecturers are ready.

" However, as long as the universities administrations are ready to fully support lecturers and students in terms of the full compliment of facilities for e-learning, we are ready. But remember, e-learning has a pedagogy different from the pedagogy of face-to-face.". As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to rave, there have been calls that Universities and other institutions of learning should switch to E-learning, a move that has led to mixed reactions from different quarters.
